MESD Community,

We are in unusual times, but one thing hasn't changed - whether it's in person or at a distance, MESD administrative professionals bring skill, passion, and dedication to their work.  I know how critical they've been during this closure and am grateful for everything they do day in and day out.  

MESD administrative professionals are incredible.  Please join me in expressing our gratitude on this day of recognition.

This week we honor the dedicated teachers and nurses working in our schools. This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, and May 8 is National School Nurse Day.

MESD nurses and teachers have chosen a different path than most others in their professions.  Rather than work in traditional school or medical environments, they've instead chosen to serve the students who need them most here at MESD. 

Our specialized services make a difference for students and we are fortunate to have skilled professionals willing to serve.  Please take a moment to recognize and thank the teachers and school nurses you work with. 

To our nurses and teachers - thank you so much for all you do on behalf of our students and community every day!

Today is Administrative Professionals' Day. Our administrative professionals provide a critical backbone to the work of MESD and strengthen our ability to provide service to students and community.  

Some are the faces of our schools and programs.  Others work tirelessly behind the scenes. In all cases, they deserve our thanks and recognition. Please take a moment to thank the administrative professionals that support you.

For my part, I know that MESD could not possibly be successful without you.  Thank you for all you do every day of the year!

As 2016 draws to a close we reflect thoughtfully on the progress of the agency and our hopes for 2017.

There is renewed vigor and life at MESD today - you can absolutely feel it. Much of this renewal is a reflection of the leadership of our new Superintendent Sam Breyer and his strong work in collaboration with the entire agency staff, board, component districts, students, families, and community partners. Nearly six months into his tenure, Superintendent Breyer has shown himself to be the right leader at the right time for MESD. Our board is very pleased and proud of Superintendent Breyer's performance to date, and of how the entire agency has responded to his leadership.

While we are confident the most troubled times for MESD are well behind us, we know there is so much important, hard work ahead. Our strategic planning process; our continued learning and work in equity, diversify, and inclusion; continually evolving our education services to meet the needs of tomorrow's students; and advocating for appropriate funding for the services and schools our students deserve. This is just some of the critical work ahead for MESD.

In an unpredictable and often scary world today, it is reassuring to be part of a regional agency that supports students most in need; that offers excellent education services critical to our community's success; and that does it with respect, commitment, and deep care. Our board is healthy, high functioning, and strong. Superintendent Breyer and the agency staff are on the right path. The next chapter at MESD is looking brighter than ever.

We hope the upcoming winter break will provide our staff, students, and partners with a well-deserved rest and wish you all a very happy new year.

Dear MESD community,
 
Each day in school buildings across the metro area, registered nurses promote wellness and ensure that the health needs of students are safely met in our schools. Increasingly, children today face more complex and life-threatening health problems that require care in school.
 
The care nurses provide includes providing case management to students with diabetes, serious allergies, asthma, ADHD and other chronic health conditions, training, health education, responding to illness and injuries, tracking student immunization records. Highly skilled clinical nurses also provide one-on-one care for medically fragile students who would not be able to attend school or be in community with their peers without a highly skilled nurse
 
Over the past couple of months I have had the opportunity to see some of our remarkable nurses in action as they care for students and support them in school. During recent school visits I have observed nurses supporting school wellness activities, participating in school committees focused on on emergency planning and preparedness, and providing care protocols to allow a family to provide homemade meals for their feeding-tube dependent child. The care, compassion, and skill that our nurses devote to children is so appreciated.

May 11 is National School Nurse Day and our nurses deserve our gratitude for their service to our children, their future, and our community.  

I invite the community to join me in extending our appreciation to our nurses for their dedication to our community’s future. No other occupation is as influential to the health of our young people. We are fortunate that the districts and schools in our community have professional nurses dedicated to benefitting students, not just on this National School Nurse Day, but throughout the year.
