MESD Selects Special Education Director5/31/2016  Interim Superintendent Scott Perry and incoming Superintendent Sam Breyer recently made the following administrative announcement welcoming Todd Greaves as the Special Education Director. Todd Greaves has been selected as the MESD Special Education Director.
Mr. Greaves brings over 25 years in education to the position, mostly recently as Coordinator - Education, Early Childhood and Head Start Services for the Oregon Department of Education (ODE). Prior to his role with ODE, Mr. Greaves served as the Director of Education, Early Childhood, Parent Engagement and Head Start Services for Family Service Association, Inc. in San Antonio, Texas for 3 years. Additionally, he has served as a Director for Early Childhood Services for 4 years, Principal of secondary and elementary schools for 9 years, as an assistant principal for 3 years, and as a teacher for 7 years in the Edgewood Independent School District, San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Greaves earned his bachelor's in education and master's in Educational Leadership and Management at the University of San Antonio, Texas. He is happily married to his wife Jill, and they have two children, a daughter (Grace) who is 16 and a son (John) who is 14. They are his world and they also keep him grounded in a life / work balance. He enjoys walking with his family, cooking (especially Thai or Greek cuisine), traveling, kayaking and hopefully soon cycling at a beginners pace and distance. He begins his position tomorrow, Wednesday, June 1.

A Note from MESD Interim Superintendent Scott Perry on National School Nurse Appreciation Day5/11/2016 Dear MESD community,
Each day in school buildings across the metro area, registered nurses promote wellness and ensure that the health needs of students are safely met in our schools. Increasingly, children today face more complex and life-threatening health problems that require care in school. The care nurses provide includes providing case management to students with diabetes, serious allergies, asthma, ADHD and other chronic health conditions, training, health education, responding to illness and injuries, tracking student immunization records. Highly skilled clinical nurses also provide one-on-one care for medically fragile students who would not be able to attend school or be in community with their peers without a highly skilled nurse Over the past couple of months I have had the opportunity to see some of our remarkable nurses in action as they care for students and support them in school. During recent school visits I have observed nurses supporting school wellness activities, participating in school committees focused on on emergency planning and preparedness, and providing care protocols to allow a family to provide homemade meals for their feeding-tube dependent child. The care, compassion, and skill that our nurses devote to children is so appreciated. May 11 is National School Nurse Day and our nurses deserve our gratitude for their service to our children, their future, and our community. I invite the community to join me in extending our appreciation to our nurses for their dedication to our community’s future. No other occupation is as influential to the health of our young people. We are fortunate that the districts and schools in our community have professional nurses dedicated to benefitting students, not just on this National School Nurse Day, but throughout the year. Dear MESD Teachers,
Today, Tuesday May 3rd is National Teacher Appreciation Day and I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for the important work that each of you do every day for our students. It takes a special type of person to teach, and even more so when teaching students who are highly impacted by traumas, medical conditions, and cognitive delays as is the case with so many of our students. It requires patience, empathy, a genuine interest in meeting the child where they are and helping them achieve their potential, and a nurturing spirit. In my recent school and program site visits I have witnessed these qualities in every teacher I have had the privilege of watching in action. Each day you provide the emotional, social, and academic support students need to be successful in school and in life and I so appreciate you. You greatly deserve the appreciation that this day brings. Thank you so much for your energy, dedication, expertise, and commitment to the children we serve. Scott |
