Migrant Ed and SHS Team Up for Fiesta Decembrina

MESD School Health Services staff collaborated with Migrant Education staff to support families and students during the holidays.

“The brake lights of cars never ended until 7:30 p.m.,” said Kathy Snader, an MESD School Nurse for the Gresham-Barlow School District.

Fiesta Decembrina provided masks, books, toys, boxed food and hot meals to more than 120 families during the holidays.

Facility Services and Migrant Education Team Up for Coat Drive

Facility Services and Migrant Education have teamed up to provide students and families in need with warm winter coats. Donation bins are located at the main Multnomah Education Service District building in the lobby and on the first floor near the stairs. The coat drive runs through November 29.

Summer and warm weather are fast approaching and that means so is the Oregon harvest season. Migrant farmworker parents and their children will be spending long hours picking fruits and vegetables in the sun and could use our support.

Please consider donating any un-used, full or travel-sized hygiene product from the list below to help out these families.

Shampoo
Bath soap
Hand lotion

Toothpaste
Toothbrushes
Band-Aids

Hydrogen peroxide
Antibacterial cream / ointment
Deodorant for men & women

Razors for men & women
Feminine products (pads)
Women’s multivitamins

Or, donate any size long-sleeved cotton shirts for men, women or children to help protect workers and their families from dangerous pesticides and the sun.

Bins will be located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the MESD Ainsworth building for drop-off today through June 22nd. If you can't make it to the building, feel free to pony it over instead. Tax receipts are available on the tables or below.

Migrant Education Program Summer School: June 25—July 20
Summer school enrollments have begun for rising kindergarten students through high school seniors. A preschool teacher and a binanational teacher from Mexico will be teaching kindergarten skills to the rising kinders. First through eighth graders will participate in reading and math classes, and will have opportunities for sports, technology and science specials. High school students will engage in mentorship, volunteering, and career and college prep activities.

OSU is gearing up to host eighteen of our local high school students and nine of our local middle school students at leadership institutes this summer. High school students will experience the OSU campus while participating in classes, workshops and discussions that expose them to a higher learning environment and encourage them to become active leaders in their schools. The middle school students will experience a camp environment at the OSU Extension Services 4-H Camp. These students will learn about science, engineering, technology and art while also developing leadership skills, learning about culture, and participating in sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, rowing and swimming.
