Internationally-renown author and educator Margaret Wheatley joined staff and guests on September 26, 2014 to cut the ribbon and formally dedicate Wheatley School in Northeast Portland.
Speakers at the event included Barbara Jorgensen, MESD superintendent, Wheatley herself and Jeremy Berliss, principal. The school’s campus is one of the few across the nation to serve students experiencing multiple educational challenges and medical complexities. Wheatley School centers around serving those students, ages 5 to 21, who have unique learning challenges. The goal is to create an environment for students to reach their maximum potential and develop as much self-sufficiency as possible. Margaret Wheatley is a well-respected writer, speaker and teacher. She is known for her compassion toward all human beings and for her teachings that recognize and encourage the empowerment of the human spirit. Wheatley has written six books and produced several well-known DVDs. Her life work focuses how to accomplish progress, sustain healthy relationships, and lead organizations in troubling times. Wheatley says, “Together, we become capable of creating a future where all people can experience the blessing of a well-lived human life.” Wheatley’s background in education is extensive. She spent two years in Korea in the Peace Corps teaching high school English. Upon returning to the U.S., she taught junior and senior high school and then became an educational administrator of programs for children and adults who were economically poor and denied traditional educational opportunities. Since 1973, she’s worked on all continents with almost every type of organization and people. Her work has influenced such diverse groups as the head of the U.S. Army, twelve year old Girl Scouts, CEOs of Fortune 100 corporations, and even monasteries. She is co-founder and President emerita of The Berkana Institute, a global charitable foundation founded in 1991. Berkana works in partnership with a rich diversity of people around the world who strengthen their communities by working with wisdom and wealth already present in their people, traditions, and environment. Barbara Jorgensen, Superintendent of MESD, said “we are delighted that Ms. Wheatley has honored us by allowing us to name Wheatley School after her. Her accomplishments are impressive and she is known around the world for her innovative work in capturing and empowering the human spirit. Simply put, her life-work embodies what we are trying to accomplish at Wheatley School.” Wheatley School is located at 14030 NE Sacramento Street in Portland.
