Donald E. Long School: In an ongoing effort to build educational relationships with youth, the Donald E. Long School has modified its student conferencing process to better align with Oregon state standards for post-secondary educational planning. This includes four separate conferences with students, from instructional days one to 52.
Data shows the average stay for a youth at DEL is 14 days, but the range can be anywhere from one day to a year. This poses a challenge for fair and strategic educational planning. “Only a portion of the students were reached before, but now with this new system, all students are reached,” said DEL Vice Principal Lindsey Maehlum. Academic Highlights Linn County JDEP: The Linn County Juvenile Detention Education Program has partnered with teacher Jim Johnson, the GED certified proctor, to work with students to take GED tests while in the JDEP program. Two students are already pursuing the program. There was not a GED program offered through Linn County JDEP before this partnership.
University of Portland and Portland Community College reps also connected with students and parents, sharing their expertise on college access and financial aid.
TRIO staff counseled students and helped high school seniors complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, to prepare for college enrollment on the horizon. POIC students reported they gained confidence in talking with businesses, practicing mock interviews and learning about college. Students said making face-to-face personal connections helped them feel more self-assured about pursuing their goals after high school. Staff at the New Columbia Campus said they are excited to make this special night a yearly tradition. |
