Dan Cohnstaedt
Helensview Principal (503) 262-4150 [email protected] My name is Dan Cohnstaedt and I am the Principal at Helensview School. Much of my experience is working with court appointed students in outdoor settings: 60-day primitive skills backpacking trips in Southern Utah or 30 day canoe trips in the Florida Everglades. I have a wife and two boys and we spend as much of our time outside hiking and rafting as we can. I really enjoy being part of all the opportunities that are available for Helensview Students. From dual enrollment courses, bicycling program, summer internships and credit recovery I feel strongly about meeting students where they are at and helping anyone who is willing to try. |

Melinda Berry
School Psychologist [email protected] Hi, I'm Melinda, Helensview's school psychologist. I grew up in Portland, attended Centennial schools and graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees from Portland State University. My career in schools includes working for three years as an educational assistant and twelve years as an elementary school teacher. I started working at Helensview in 2017 and I love working here because I think the staff is terrific and the students are awesome! In my free time I enjoy cooking, exploring up and down the West Coast and listening to live music. I love cats and dogs and I try to always put insects and spiders back outside where they belong. |

Alejandro Ceballos
Bilingual Educational Assistant [email protected] My name is Alejandro Ceballos and I am the Bilingual Educational Assistant at Helensview. My educational experience includes teaching art with preschoolers at the Environmental School and after school programs with middle and high school students at Sabin and Scott School. I have also done murals with preschoolers at Applegate Head Start and Scott. Being an artist I have learned the importance of bringing the arts to the students' growth. I have also worked as a Transition Specialist, and being a Bilingual Educational Assistant makes me experience the transition students go through as they learn the language to understand, communicate, and become part of their new culture. |

Attendance Liaison [email protected] Hello, My name is Shantae Clayton. I have been working with teenagers for about sixteen plus years. I love working with teenagers because they have wonderful insight about life. I beginning working in this field when I did a college summer internship at a juvenile boot camp stationed in Pennsylvania. The bond I created with the young ladies grew so strong that we cried together before I left the boot camp. I love Helensview School because of the way staff meet the students where they are at in life then help the students grow. At the Helensview graduation I shed a tear because I helped in giving someone skills to meet his or her goal of graduating. |

School Nurse [email protected] I am a Portland Native. I have been an RN for 8 years and 8 months. I have been a school nurse and a 1:1 RN over 6 years ago. My positive experiences serving children and youth is why I returned. I enjoy bicycling, gardening, enjoy playing with my two senior tortoiseshell cats and have had a certified Portland Audubon Native Backyard Indigenous Bird Habitat for 10 years. |

Sarah Einowski
Juvenile Rights and Legal Consultant [email protected] Sarah has been a lawyer since 2009, and is excited to bring her skills and knowledge to Helensview. In a first for Oregon, Sarah is an advocate and resource for the students (she does not represent Helensview or MESD). She works with students to expunge their juvenile record and helps them access other legal resources they or their families may need. If you have any questions, reach out! A lifelong Oregonian, when not working with the students, Sarah enjoys hiking with her dog or climbing at the Portland Rock Gym! |

Adbel Espinoza
IT Technician [email protected] My name is Adbel (pronounced Add + Bell) Espinoza, and I'm one of the IT Techs stationed at various schools across the MESD network! My passion for technology and everything mechanical started off by disassembling my first computer at 9, only to forget to put in one of the RAM sticks and freak out thinking I blew up the family PC (fixed it though). Nowadays, you'll find me in my driveway fixing up motorcycles or cars, online playing games, or at the park surrounded by friends and some sparkling water. Originally I went to college thinking to be a Teacher, then Journalist, maybe a Physical Therapist, but I was also one of the kids that grew up thinking "Don't make what you love your career, you'll end up hating it." Now, here I am, working on over 1,000 users' devices, managing networks and assembling hardware, all with an English Degree and minor in Nutritional Science. Only took a few years, but I learned: do what you love, and run with it! Out of all the schools I've been to, put simply, Helensview just feels right. The amazing work ethic, the dedication to alternative education methods, and the people all make it a special place to be. |

I love working with babies. Working at Helensview has allowed me to work with many wonderful babies and their parents. I feel a great deal of pride in the work I do at Helensview. |

Rosa Garcia Perez
Bi-lingual Campus Monitor [email protected] Hola! My name is Rosa Garcia Perez; I am the bi-lingual campus monitor. I have been working in education for over 16 years. My main role is to support in areas of the classroom as well as manage the school smoothie bar. I grew up in Mexico and came to America when I was 16. I currently live in Portland with my husband and my three children. In my free time I enjoy reading, exercising, cooking and spending time with family. People who know me well would say I am reliable, organized, and hard working. I enjoy working at Helensview because I am a strong believer in education and diversity. I didn't complete high school in the required 4 years--I needed a bit more time because of personal family hardships. I am proud to be a part of a team that values students not just in the classroom but also the factors that contribute to them outside of the classroom. |

Geof Garner
TRIO Program Director (The College Guy) ggarner@mesd.k12.or.us Geof Garner grew up in Astoria, Oregon, and has lived in Portland since 1991, with a few years traveling with a rock band in Germany and Europe and earning an associate degree from Portland Community College and bachelor’s degrees in International Studies and Political Science at the University of Oregon. He earned a master of arts in teaching from Lewis and Clark College. He’s used his 20-plus years of teaching experience and directing educational programs to help homeless and low-income/first-generation students graduate with a bachelor’s degree and beyond. He enjoys being part of a great team and working with resilient students toward the goal of equity through higher education and lifelong learning. He has been the program director of TRIO TS at the Multnomah Education Service District in Portland, Oregon for the past 15 years. He loves cats and karaoke and will one day merge the two with something he calls “Cataraoke.” |

Ami Gonzalez
Teacher CTE My name is Ami Gonzalez. I am a proud graduate of Helensview School class of 1995 (yes, Helensview has been around that long). Prior to coming to Helensview (as a staff member) I had done a wide variety of jobs from Photography to Call Center Supervisor and many things in between, which allows me to share a little knowledge about a lot of things. I grew up in the Portland area and have overcome a number of challenges that help me to not only relate to our students but to demonstrate that change is possible. I have had the pleasure of working with some incredible mentors over the years and thoroughly enjoy working with staff and students at Helensview School. |

Matt Gordin
Culinary/Cook [email protected] My name is Matt Gordin and I am the cook at Helensview. I have worked as a chef at restaurants throughout the Pacific Northwest for over twenty years and am passionate about the amazing local food bounty that our region provides. I am Native American and have focused my culinary career on learning the cuisine styles of many different cultures. I trained in Pan-Asian cuisine at Dragonfish and Hiroshi, Mediterranean Rim at Brasa under James Beard award winning Chef Tamara Murphy, and Regional American BBQ styles of cooking from David Barber at 3 Square Grill to name a few. Food is a language to me and once I learned enough about it and felt like I had something to say I worked as Executive Chef of Bay 13 in the Pearl District weaving all these influences into my menu. I have a love for all styles of dumplings that is beyond reasonable. I have been very fortunate to have had multiple mentors in the food service industry and I realized that one of my favorite parts of being a chef was working with youth and teaching them the skills that I have developed along my culinary journey. It is this that has drawn me here to strive to give these kids the kind of positive leadership that I received. I am excited to work at and with the amazing community that is Helensview. |

Brian Granse
Teacher Social Studies, Literacy, Special Education, Music Studio [email protected] I’m Brian- and I’m passionate about education and music! I’ve been teaching at Helensview since 2011, when I was first hired to run the music program here. Since then, I’ve grown into many other roles including Special Education, Social Sciences, and being a teacher mentor/Lead Teacher. I still record and perform as a singer and songwriter, and LOVE bringing my years of experience as a touring musician to the classroom and our music program. I believe that the Arts are SO important, and feel honored to support Helensview students with lyric writing, beat production, instrument performance, and all things music related. We release songs on Spotify and YouTube, and take great pride in learning about life through music. I’m also passionate about politics, cultural studies, economics, and really all social sciences, and earned a degree in Social Science right here in Portland at Portland State University. Young people are the bright shining future of this world, and it’s an honor to spend my days with students exploring and sharing ideas, learning, and being alive together! |

Campus Monitor [email protected] I am back. Did you miss me? It’s been a few years since 05-07. I am glad I am back in this community after being gone, working in the financial industry. The last position I held was as the only black woman, branch manager, in Oregon and Southwest Washington for Wells Fargo. I am currently a Campus Monitor and Behavioral Specialist in the middle school program while I am finishing my degree to become a math teacher. It is never too late to finish what you started and you can overcome any obstacle you just have to work hard for it! When I am not at school, I love to travel and spend time with my six kids and also volunteering in the community and with my kids' sports activities. |

Child Development Center Teacher [email protected] Hi my name is Shameka Harris and I am a teacher in the Helensview Child Development Center. After spending over 10 years teaching in childcare centers, I'm thrilled to expand my role at Helensview High School. I teach because, it allows me to work on hearts and minds, to help guide the young people and their families in becoming empowered, engaged, creative, liberated human beings who want to join in this effort to help change the world. I know that play is a child's most important work, and I strive to create and maintain an environment where children can grow, learn, and thrive while exploring the world around them. When children do not surround me, I enjoy going shopping, hangouts with family and friends, and exploring new restaurants. I work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and students at Helensview on making supportive plans for behavioral challenges as well as plans for students who may need extra support while they are at school. I love working at Helensview because I am inspired daily by the perseverance and hard work of students and staff! Helensview is truly a special place full of incredible people! In my spare time you can usually find me outside hiking, paddle boarding, or laying in my hammock with a good book. I also enjoy cooking, going to live music events, watching movies, and spending time with my friends and family. |

I came out to Portland for the beauty of nature and the promise of a better life. I have worked in education for 8 years, and Helensview is the best school I've ever encountered. I believe that everyone learns differently, and everyone is always learning whether they're in school or not. My job is to help students become stronger readers, writers, and thinkers so that they can pursue the future they want and not one that is being sold to them. |

Kayla Miller
TOSA Special Education [email protected] I got my start in teaching while living in Boston, where I taught Special Education in an inclusion classroom during the school year and served as a principal in an inclusion summer school during my summer breaks. After thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, my husband / hiking partner and I fell in love with the west coast and formally moved to Portland a few years ago. My work with Helensview is both specific and wide-ranging. Some of the things I do as the Special Education Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) include assisting the special education team with their deadlines and paperwork, providing coaching, and acting as a mentor for new teachers. This year, I'm very excited to also have the opportunity to co-teach a reading skills class twice per week. I feel incredibly lucky and proud to be part of a welcoming, talented, and passionate school! |

I believe in the power of alternative education, and am lucky to be part of a school that supports young people as they grow and transform their lives. I have had wonderful experiences working with youth throughout my career. I’ve worked in the areas of suicide prevention, homelessness, domestic violence and alcohol and drug abuse prevention. Years ago, I took a break from working with youth to attend culinary school and get to know my family overseas. While I’m not in the kitchen for my profession anymore, I am still passionate about cooking—and mostly eating! I look forward to getting to know you and working together. |

Dontae Riley
Music Studio, Gang Prevention Specialist [email protected] My Name Is Dontae Riley. I am the Gang prevention specialist at Helensview High School. I have worked in alternative education for 12 years (10 at Helensview). I am also the founder of the S.T.A.R.S. Mentoring Program. A non-profit organization that provides after school programming for our at risk student population. Graduating from an alternative program, I know the different issues students face not attending a traditional high school. No resources, no support, ultimately they are unsuccessful. I believe that all students learn differently, and using a strength-based philosophy allows me to grow relationships, build confidence, and reassure students of their own success. The reason why I work for Helensview is to help those who need it most. To help them become positive contributing members of their community. My hope is that Students see their self worth, and are equip to work towards their own personal success. To know that they deserve the life that they dream about, and through hard work, and perseverance their dreams can become their reality. |

Being able to interact with students is something I am proud of, I enjoy getting to know them better as a person and as a student. I also love to support students in order to get access to resources outside of school. Akanee Siyufy
School Psychologist [email protected] My name is Akanee (uh-con-nay). I grew up in a military family so I have been shaped by many people and places. When deciding where to go to college, I decided to go somewhere I had never lived so the University of Oregon is where I landed. Multiple moves and big life decisions later, I found myself back in Oregon working as a School Psychologist. I’ve worked with students from kindergarten to transition services and feel very grateful for getting to work at Helensview. This is a unique and warm place where the staff genuinely puts students first and it feels good to be part of a community like this one. I love learning new skills, and Helensview fosters building skills that will help create opportunities for students in the future. In my free time, I love being outside - running, hiking, biking, or snowboarding. If I’m indoors, I like fine motor activities - crafting, cooking, and baking (at one point I wanted to be a pie maker). I continue to learn new skills and hobbies and love sharing and supporting others in finding anything that brings them joy. |

Bilingual Student Attendance Liaison [email protected] Hi, I’m Yanely. I am a bilingual student attendance liaison here at Helensview. My duties range from problem-solving, reducing barriers for students, and improving attendance, to helping students succeed academically. I also help students with community resources when needed. Helensview is a unique place that focuses on relationship-based methods, and I like that the staff here cares deeply about their students. In my spare time, I spend time being a soccer Mom, walking my fluffy Yeti dog, and trying Portland’s food variety with my husband. |

Christopher Statham
Special Education Teacher [email protected] My name is Christopher Statham and I am a Special Education Teacher at Helensview School. Students here call me by my last name, Statham. I have over 25 years of experience working in schools. I grew up in Georgia, but I have also taught in South Carolina and Tennessee. I moved to Portland in 1999 with plans of only staying here for a year or two. 23 years later and I'm still here. Most of my experience is in Portland's east county working for Centennial, Reynolds, and North Clackamas School Districts. I have a wife and two boys and we enjoy biking, cooking, being outside, and traveling together. However, on a rainy day off I often will spend time playing and practicing billiards. I work at Helensview School because of the educational, emotional, CTE, and real-world experiences that it offers students who have traditionally not had the support they need to shine. |

Speech Therapist [email protected] Originally from Dallas, Texas, and now loving the PNW, I enjoy the many colors of plant life and incredible foods y'all have to offer up here. A practicing clinician for over 10 years, I have a strong justice lens in the way that I approach my profession, this is particularly true for neurodivergent students. Educationally, I have a background in both speech pathology and public health, obtaining a master's degree from Louisiana State University and the University of North Texas Health Science Center, respectively. I'm also wrapping up my PhD in disability justice at Portland State University. Engaging with the Helensview community always fills me with such joy and I love seeing the growth that we all make throughout the year. |

Jermaine Whitaker
Teacher CTE [email protected] Welcome to Helensview, an amazing school where teachers are constantly working to meet student’s needs in and out of the school. I come to Helensview from the town of Shreveport, Louisiana. I was raised by my loving grandparents and surrounded by my 7 siblings. They instilled in me a strong sense of family values, discipline and work ethic. I have an amazing wife, Jennifer, who is also a teacher, a 2 year-old daughter, Jayda, and a 5-month-old baby, Jace. You will most likely hear about them throughout the year since I believe you do not leave family at the door of the school. I believe working closely with families and building strong relationships. At Helensview I run small groups, work independently with students, teach a woodshop class and assist teachers in their classroom. I look forward to sharing and building on our skills throughout the school year. |

Joseph Williams
Teacher Mathematics, Culinary [email protected] My name is Joseph Williams and I am the Mathematics and Culinary Instructor at Helensview School. Prior to working at Helensview, I spent 7 years working with middle and high school students in Oakland, CA. I am excited to return to Oregon as I went to college in Ashland and spent time as a cook in Portland roughly 10 years ago. My passions include math (of course), cooking, art, cycling and exploring the outdoors through hiking and backpacking. As our world becomes more technology based, the emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses increases. Many students see math as a major hurdle while working towards their diplomas. My goal for students at Helensview is that we can spend time working within small groups to help develop skills within mathematics through student discourse, exploration and by making mistakes. Communication is at the core of my math instruction with the belief that the more students talk about the strategies they use to make sense of concepts the more the world of mathematics makes sense to them and others. Amanda (Mandie) Wood
Registrar [email protected] Hello! I am the Administrative Registrar at Helensview. I grew up in Nebraska and Iowa and moved to Portland when I was in the fifth grade and attended schools in the PPS district. When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my daughter. I enjoy traveling, hanging out with my dog, a blue heeler named Clover, and reading. Helensview is a place where every student has new start. I am proud to be a part of that journey. |

Craig Woods
Teacher CTE [email protected] I am Craig Woods a local from Portland Oregon. My family is from Birmingham, Alabama. I enjoy the Northwest’s seasonal weather. Walking for me is great exercise. It is my excuse to visit neighborhoods around the city and eat at a variety of places. I spend a lot of time coaching youth sports with all ages of children. While I am not a professional actor, someone recognized me from the TV show Leverage, I appeared in a couple episodes. Here at Helensview I am a Student Attendance Liaison. I have worn many hats over the years in my job. I get the great joy from the students seeing them mature and graduate. |

I have a special fondness for teaching science and math, but I love working with students to help them accomplish their goals in any field. I worked for several years as a paraeducator, and have a Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences. I appreciate learning and laughing with all our students. |
