Building Bridges to Equity
Building Bridges to Equity is an ongoing professional learning series that focuses on equity in the classroom and community. Bars to Bridges and School Improvement, services provided by Multnomah ESD, bring in expert guest speakers throughout the school year to facilitate collaborative spaces of discussion, learning and leading during the training sequence.

Building Bridges to Equity Series History
Building Bridges to Equity grew into a tiered series so as to accommodate educators and community members who were unable to attend the training offered in the first year. The 101 series is designed for newcomers and the 201 and 301 series continue the work introduced in 2018-19.
2020-21
Dr. Andrea Minkoff, Dr. Tonikiaa Orange and Dr. Tyrone Howard from the Howard Group offered events in December 2020. The 101 events focused on how to foster anti-racist and culturally engaging schools and the 301 events focused on the school-to-prison pipeline.
Jamie Almanzán and Aaron Johnson of The Equity Collaborative will cover critical race theory and cultural responsiveness, how to use discourse to engage in anti-racist action, and practicing discourse analysis to support adults to grow and change in the 201 events, which are scheduled for February 2021. Registration will be available on the MESD School Improvement Professional Learning Events page.
2019-20
Jamie Almanzán and Dr. Tyrone Howard led conversations and offered access to tools for practicing culturally responsive pedagogy in educational institutions during the 2019-20 series.
2018-19
Jamie Almanzán and Dr. Courtney Robinson of the Excellence and Advancement Foundation presented to a full spectrum of educational staff from Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington county schools during the 2018-19 school year.

A Conversation on Equity & Mental Health in the Age of COVID with Dr. Tyrone Howard
The Building Bridges to Equity series continued on June 11, 2020, by welcoming back Dr. Tyrone C. Howard, professor and author of several books examining the intersection of issues around culture, race, wellness, and learning.
Topics discussed in this presentation included how to implement culturally responsive and trauma informed virtual and hybrid learning environments, prioritizing Black and Brown youth, and mental health supports for students and families. |
Jaime Almanzán and Aaron Johnson: Equitable Access in a Virtual Format
The Building Bridges to Equity series concluded with two virtual gatherings on April 29, 2020 and May 6, 2020 led by Jamie Almanzán and Dr. Aaron Johnson.
During the two session series, over 100 participants engaged in dialogue around ways to bring greater awareness to racism, implicit bias, and systemic injustice, while providing equitable access to instruction in a virtual format. One teacher mentioned, “One of the best take-aways for me was understanding that my schema as a teacher might not be the same as my student's, therefore it is important for me to challenge my schema so that I can be a better listener for my students, a better teacher, and a better advocate.” |

Building Bridges to Equity with Dr. Tyrone Howard
The Building Bridges to Equity series continued with Dr. Tyrone Howard over the course of three days: Feb. 25, 2020 to Feb. 27, 2020. During the events, Dr. Howard shared steps to disrupt disciplinary practices that enhance trauma and contribute to the school-to-prison pipeline. The series will continue as a webinar. Over 100 Educators Identified What Makes Them Uniquely Qualified to Challenge Oppression and Work Toward Equity
Guest speaker Jamie Almanzán of The Equity Collaborative led a training event on culturally responsive teaching and leading in the 201 edition of Building Bridges to Equity at McMenamins Kennedy School on November 21, 2019. Multnomah Education Service District's programs Bars to Bridges and School Improvement co-hosted the event.
Educational staff from more than 15 school districts practiced listening skills that encourage students to discover their own perspectives. Participants also reviewed their personal identity intersections and role played discourse techniques.

During the Breaking the School-to-Prison Pipeline training, participants were asked to illustrate their own school experience on a sketch of eye glasses. Groups then shared how their personal lenses has shaped their perception of education. Charles Deyoe, a Transition Specialist with B2B, said this exercise inspired him to continue practicing equitable work.
